Asking Questions Builds Faith

April 04, 2024
By Joel Gutowsky

All three of my daughters are officially in the season(s) of life where their favorite question to ask is, “Why?”. Now, each daughter responds to my answer in a different way. Hazel, who is 4, simply says, “ok!”. Maggie, who is 8 gives me a skeptical look, and Anna, who is 10, asks so many follow up questions.

Sometimes I find myself getting frustrated at the question because many times it is a question that they will never find a sufficient answer to. So instead of one “why”, it becomes multiple “whys”, and now an hour of my day is gone.

When it comes to the things of faith, questions are beautiful. When we have questions, we are seeking answers. When we have questions, we are looking to grow in our wisdom and knowledge of Jesus. Questions are amazing both for our students AND for us as parents to have.

I can tell you that from sitting in the classroom with our juniors and seniors in our Worldview class, our students have many questions… Questions about Jesus, questions about faith, questions about the “c”hurch and the “C”hurch. When you give your students opportunities to ask questions you learn a TON about their heart and about the things that they are passionate about.

Questions are an absolutely beautiful thing and should not be discouraged. It is my prayer that you have created in your home a safe and comfortable space where questions are allowed to exist, but also where questions can go unanswered.

So, I dare you, allow your students to ask hard questions. I promise you, the conversations and opportunities to encourage and point your students to Jesus will be life giving.
