Faith Believes Even When It Makes No Sense

We tend to be a pretty smart group here at Logos Prep. We value education and we understand how to study and break things down into meaningful chunks of material that we can manage. We rely on ourselves, even pride ourselves, to be problem solvers and fixers. But life is full of things  we cannot fix. As we grow in our relationship with the Lord we realize that His goal is to make us more dependent on Him. We tend to think we are supposed to move towards independence, that the Lord will be proud of us when we do it on our own and then show Him what we’ve accomplished. But that is not how the Kingdom of God works. Kingdom principles are upside down to the world. We raise our children to become more and more independent of us as they grow older. We ARE proud when they “do it by myself;” but the opposite is true with our Father. He wants us to grow in our dependence on Him as we trust Him by faith. Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 5:7 “For we live by faith, not by sight.” But we like things we can see and control and figure out on our own. Remember we are smart people! Over and over again the Lord uses circumstances in our lives to draw us closer to Him and to trust Him. These beautiful opportunities are cleverly disguised as impossible situations where we must choose if we will lean into the Lord to guide us even when it makes no sense or if we will continue to struggle to figure it out on our own.

There is a story in 2 Kings 4 about a widow and a small amount of oil. There is famine in the land and the widow asks Elisha to help her pay her creditors so they won’t take her sons. Elisha asks her what she has in her house. She says just a little oil. I love that! When we cry to the Lord for help and He says, “What do you have?” and we know, just like the widow, what we have is not enough for what we need but the Lord already knows that. He wants to make sure we know it too. He wants to make sure that we know we NEED to depend on Him to do the miracle. The next part is my favorite. In vs. 3  Elisha said, “Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don’t ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side.”  What?? That makes no sense!” Would you have done that? Gone to your neighbors and said, “You got any big ol’ empty jars I can have to fill with oil from my teeny tiny jar of oil?”

What is our usual response when God asks us to do something that is outside of what we think we have the ability to do and makes no sense to our natural minds? Faith often requires more of your trust and less of your instincts. I have a friend who has been encouraging me in every situation lately to stop and ask the Lord, “What do you want me to know?” and “What do you want me to do?” Then listen and obey.

God did not promise us that if we love and serve Him all would go well with us. He promises to be with us in the hard times when nothing makes sense. Romans 4:18 says, “Against all hope, Abraham  believed in hope and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be. Without weakening in his faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.”  Keep believing when it doesn’t make sense. God keeps His promises and He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek HIM! Get your hopes up!
